Sea Lion was abandoned not only because Germany lacked naval or air superiority but also due to the strength of British land defenses. As the Germans did not have the shipping to transport heavy equipment, the invasion force was to be primarily light infantry vs. the British who would have had a significant superiority in tanks and artillery in the battle. Also the British planned to deploy mustard gas on the landing beaches which likely would have turned Sea Lion into a brutal defeat for the Germans.
